Fourth Grade

What We're Doing

We are spending part of each class period writing our own science fiction stories.  We read several science fiction stories earlier this spring and discussed the characteristics of science fiction writing.  The students are now applying those characteristics to write their own stories.  They are writing their stories on Google Docs if you would like to read them at home.

The rest of our class time is spent continuing our study of robotics by combining all of our programming knowledge to complete more open ended tasks from this past year's FIRST Robotics Challenge.  The robotics challenges we did earlier in the year told the students which sensor or skill to use to complete the challenge.  Our current challenges give the students a job to do, but it is up to the students to decide on the best way to accomplish this task.  Many times, they even need to build another attachment for the robot to be able to accomplish the task.  The bottom video on the right gives an overview of the whole robotics competition with all of the missions that students can choose to solve.  The top video on the right shows the first mission that one of our teams solved.  They had to program the robot to go to the rain cloud and slide a piece over to drop the rain droplets from the cloud.  They are doing a great job of creative problem solving to figure out how to complete these missions.
