Fifth Grade

What We're Doing

We have spent the last several weeks back in our law unit.  We studied the idea of intellectual property and the importance of copyrights.  We listened to songs to see how copyrights had been violated and discussed the idea of sampling.

We are currently putting our debate skills to work with a mock trial.   Our trial is a modern day version of the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  The students have been given an overview of the events that occurred from different points of view.  Both the prosecution and defense teams are working on writing questions and answers for their witnesses that help to convince the jury of their point of view.  They are doing a great job of analyzing the details in different witnesses' affidavits to write questions that will support their side of the case.  We will hold the actual trial at the end of May with a live jury to decide on the verdict.  The video on the right shows an example of a mock trial.  We watched a few short parts of the video to get an idea of what to expect for a mock trial.
